Memorial Day Rodeo raising local funds

The Memorial Day Rodeo was another record-breaking success for the Wimberley 4-H Buyers Pool.

“We had a record crowd, and it was great,” Brent McCallick, Director of the Wimberley 4-H Buyer’s Pool, said. “It was hot, but the weather held up for both days this year, and it was a lot of fun.”

All of the money raised by the Memorial Day Rodeo goes to the Wimberley 4-H Buyer’s Pool. The buyer’s pool uses the funds to purchase animals at the Hays County Live Stock Show, fund scholarships and funds Wimberley 4-H.

“It’s a ribbon sale at the Live Stock Show, so we don’t actually get the animals,” McCallick said. “The kids get the money to help offset the cost of raising the animals, but they also still get to sell them at some of the bigger shows.”

This year, Wimberley 4-H gave out two $1,000 scholarships. Last year they gave out eight total scholarships.

“We make sure every senior who qualifies through the 4-H gets a scholarship,” McCallick said.

Overall, the funds help make the Wimberley 4-H possible.

“One of the most important things to me is teaching kids what it takes to feed and clothe the nation and the world,” McCallick said. “So many people think food arrives in a plastic wrapper and that is not the case. There are a lot of aspects to raising animals that this program teaches like responsibly, caring and the financial aspects of trying to raise an animal. We couldn’t do it without the support of the community.”
