Wimberley Players plan holiday movies and New Year’s Eve Bash

December is virtually here. Just two more weekends to see the Wimberley Player’s production of The Lion in Winter (closes Dec. 2!). Community concerts and many holiday events will hear final applause very soon. The children will be out of school. Friends and relatives will be in town for Christmas.

So the Wimberley Players are providing a little extra entertainment right before and after Christmas. Wouldn’t it be great to have movies that get everyone out of the house for a holiday break—without leaving town? Wouldn’t it be great to have a classy New Year’s Eve celebration that promises you’ll get home early and still laughing after a very funny improv show?

Members of the Players event team have the answers:

“We’re very excited to offer three movies on days when our theater would otherwise be dark,” said Bob Smith, who heads the team. “We think folks will welcome some entertainment away from those solitary phones, tablets and laptops.”

The films begin with Polar Express for children on Saturday Dec. 22 at 2 pm. It’s the story of a doubting young boy who takes an amazing train ride to the North Pole and discovers what believing is all about. “One of my favorite movies,” remembers Chick Morgan. She added that children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.

On Sunday Dec. 23, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye star in the beloved vintage movie, White Christmas.

“We’re showing a version of the movie that is also a singalong,” said David Bisett, president of the Players. Doors open at 2:00 and the movie starts at 3:00. “You don’t have to sing like Bing or Rosemary to join in the fun. It should be a great community afternoon,” he said.

On Friday Dec. 28, grownups can leave leftovers and children behind (get your sitter early), to settle back at 7:30 pm for Les Miserables, an award-winning 2012 movie based on the tale by Victor Hugo. The film is a musical set in a revolutionary period in France with the legendary French peasant Jean Valjean pursued by an infamous police inspector. For adults and children 12 and up.

New Year’s Eve will see the Playhouse converted into a glamorous party venue, with a performance by Austin’s Hideout Theatre. Karen Rudy will bring her special talent to the décor and refreshments. “The Hideout Theatre was a big hit last year, and we’re thrilled to have them back,” she said. “The party begins at 6 pm with a meet-andgreet and cash bar.

The show begins at 7 pm with prosecco and appetizers at intermission. At 9 pm, the party wraps up, but this year we’re adding an after party.” Celebrations in other parts of the world will be streamed on the movie screen. “So you have an option to prolong your celebration,” commented Teresa Kendrick.

Sandra Haney added, “For me, there’s a special pleasure in sharing holiday events with people I know. The Playhouse is a very welcoming place.” Nancy Williams and Sissi Baskin agree. Both came to the theatre for New Year’s Eve last year and are now enthusiastically involved in special events.

Concessions and adult beverages are available at every show. Please be prompt; seating is not reserved at these events. Movie tickets, $5 for children under 12; $10 for adults. New Year’s Eve Bash, $75 per person. Tickets now at wimberleyplayers.org or call the box office at 512-847-0575. The Wimberley Playhouse is located at 450 Old Kyle Road.
