Ray Wylie Hubbard at Suzanna’s Kitchen

It’s been pointed out that having Ray Wylie Hubbard making his home here is the closest thing to having a Beatle living in our midst that Wimberley has ever known. Though he spends most of the time he’s not touring in and around his place in Wimberley, it isn’t often that the hometown crowd gets to enjoy his music in person. On May 16, the legendary Ray Wylie Hubbard returns to the Susanna’s Kitchen Coffeehouse stage.

Rolling Stone has rated Hubbard’s “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother,” first made famous by Jerry Jeff Walker on a 1973 recording as one of the 100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time. Yet Hubbard himself calls the music he plays rock-and-roll, even though his style has become associated with outlaw country.

In a 2017 Rolling Stone review of his latest release Tell The Devil I’m Getting There As Fast As I Can which features gritty guitar work of Hubbard and his son Lucas, he says, “You get to be my age and you start thinking about mortality, so there’s a lot of those themes in the songs. I hope God grades on a curve. “Maybe a C-minus will still get me in or something.” In the album, a dark, funny, and profane cast of characters ranging from tattooed ladies to ghosts to obscure bluesmen and recovered alcoholics might encounter God or the Devil. Each in turn offer provocation, ridicule, or temptation.

“Ray Wylie Hubbard writes the kind of songs that make you want to ride along no matter where he’s going.” Don’t miss the ride with Ray Wylie Hubbard on Thursday, May 16. Doors open by 7:00 p.m. Concert begins at 7:30 pm at Wimberley United Methodist Church (corner RR 12 & CR 1492). A crowd is anticipated for the concert so plan to get there early. Tickets are available only at the door. Adults $25, students under 18 $5. Sugar Shack Bakery pie, tamales, pizza, coffee, and soft drinks are available. Proceeds benefit Barnabas Connection, Camp Good Sam Wimberley, and Operation Good Shepherd, and provides scholarships for WUMC’s Bright Beginnings Preschool.
