projectART helping keep art in schools

Attempting to express oneself is one of the main reasons for art in the world. That need to produce something physical representing the way one feels inside. It is a very human trait. With Wimberley being an artist-rich town full of painters, photographers, musicians and craftsman of all sorts, support for art education in schools is always plentiful. Recently, that became needed.

“When Arts from the Heart disbanded, we picked up the torch where they left off,” Jennifer Ober, the President of projectART, said. “Our goal is to support our local school art programs.”

As a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit, they do that by helping teachers with supplies, special art training for teachers, offering extra curricular opportunities for students and more including purchasing a kiln for Jacob’s Well Elementary.

“We’d like to start an artist apprentice program to pair students with professional artists to learn a craft from conception to sale. Expand and really connect with the community,” Ober said. “The school’s board room and the hall of the Leaning Pear (are filled with kid’s artwork,) and they are so proud of their artwork.”

Coming Saturday, March 7, the organization’s first fundraiser, an Adult Prom Night, will be held at the Wimberley Community Center. The entertainment will be DJ Ken Strange with live music by Jenny Parrott.

“We’ll have snacks, cocktails, a photo booth, several raffles (including one for prom queen and king) and likely lots of fun attire representing everyone’s favorite decades. Our aim with projectPROM is to engage our full community,” she continued.

“Since we see a large part of the mission of projectART to be advocacy and community education about the importance of strong art programs in our schools… We want to engage the whole town in a fun way to build support for the arts…

We have a teacher sponsorship add-on with Eventbrite, where anyone can purchase a ticket and give it to a beloved teacher, staff member or administrator, so they may attend for free. And then anyone who sends us a picture from their prom (or just a great awkward-years photo), will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card.”

What a great way to support teachers, student and the arts. For more see their website at projectartwimberley.com.
