Oh no! iSMASHED my phone again!

Maybe one day they will invent an unbreakable cell phone.  But as long as people drop their phones in toilets, run over them with lawnmowers or have them fall off tops of cars, Ryan Sellers of iSMASHED is in business.

For about a year, Sellers has been fixing cell phones, iPads, Play Stations, and computers at his shop in the Plaza Del Sol Center along RR 12 in Wimberley.  There are also iSMASHED shops in Dripping Springs and Austin. “But we plan on opening more,” says Sellers.

The Austin and Dripping Springs locations are busy shops where, sometimes-impatient, customers wait for their phones to be fixed.  The Wimberley store has a more laid-back atmosphere where customers are happy to drop off a phone and pick it up in a few days. “We want to keep a good relationship with everyone in Wimberley,” says Sellers. “We want to be small town.”

Recently, a customer spotted the iSMASHED sign while driving along the road and pulled in with an ailing cell phone.  Sellers took the phone to the workshop in back and told the customer he was probably better off buying a new phone than paying for repairs.  The customer appreciated the honest advice and was on his way.

“Some phone repair places have gotten a bad reputation,” Sellers explains. “They’ll take phones like that and instead of telling him how he can get more bang for his buck, they’ll do expensive repairs on an old phone. That’s not us.”

Sellers has fixed all kinds of cell phones, with all kinds of injuries.  But the kiss of death is water.

“We offer a lifetime warranty on everything we do,” says Sellers, “except water damage.”

There’s a lot of water running through Wimberley and, more than once, someone has jumped into the river with a cell phone still in their pocket.  Usually, that’s the end of that cell phone.

The worst? Dropping a phone into the toilet. “That’s when the gloves come out,” Sellers says. “Sometimes it gets a little stinky.”

But aside from water damage, the phones can be remarkably tough.  A woman visiting Wimberley from Corpus Christi evidently left her phone on the top of her car as she drove off. It landed in the grassy area in front of iSMASHED.  The gardener ran over it with his mower and the phone got stuck and stalled the mower’s engine.  The gardener pried it out and brought it in to Sellers who put a new screen on it and it worked like new. Sellers then tracked down the owner through her wireless provider.

“People run over these phones and a lot of times they still work. It’s crazy,” Sellers laughs.

Sellers has been repairing phones for about a year.  He learned from his father Charles Sellers, who runs the Dripping Springs shop, and his brother Scott Sellers, who works the Austin store.

“Business has been good (in Wimberley),” says Sellers, who lives in New Braunfels. “But we want to see more growth.”  On a good day, 7 or 8 customers will bring in a phone.

The number one repair is a broken screen. iSMASHED also replaces batteries and fixes charge ports, speakers and cameras.  Sometimes they will tackle hardware problems. They deal mostly with Apple and Samsung products but will work with any brand. iSMASHED sells an occasional refurbished phone, but mostly they do repairs.

What does the future hold?  Sellers hopes to continue to expand and open new stores throughout Texas.  But with technology you never know what the future holds, says Sellers.
