Margaritas and Mariachis fundraiser for Good Sam

Good Sam and their camps help those kids in the summer when help is really needed to keep up reading and learning when otherwise they might regress during the summer break.

According to Good Sam’s Facebook page, “Camp Good Sam Wimberley is a six week summer program that combats summer learning loss in low-income youth living in Hays County.” The camp tries to break the cycle of at-risk youth in Wimberley.

It is a wonderful program.

The non-profit Good Sam helps school aged children learn and be fed during the summer months. In families where both parents work in order to survive, sometimes the children are left to fend for themselves during the hot months.

This is a time where low-income children can lose two to three months in reading and math skills, setting them behind other, more well off families.

Last summer’s theme was ancient Greece, their gods and legends. Projects and readings got the kids immersed in the ancient culture and their myths with new stories created by the children.

So why in February is there an article about something that will happen in June? “Each community is taxed with raising a majority of funds for the program. We do get support from Good Sam in San Antonio and grant writing and assistance. But the lion’s share of responsibility is of the board at the local level,” Traci Maxwell of Good Sam said.

“Last year Dodie Scott joined our Board of Directors, this past fall. Nobody throws a party as Dodie Scott throws a party,” Maxwell said. “The party will be held at the highest elevation in Hays County. The view is spectacular, 20 mile views.”

The fundraiser, Mariachis and Margaritas With a View benefits Camp Good Sam Wimberley and is hosted by Dodie and Dick Scott at their home.

“It’s an opportunity to come out and have a great experience and hear about the program and help cover funds for this coming summer. It is a great way to spend an afternoon at a cocktail party with beer, wine or margaritas and a live mariachi band.”

The event will be held Sunday, February 23, 2020 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. “Come on out and help us grow for our seventh summer,” Maxwell said.

Tickets should be purchased in advance for $50 and can be purchased by phone at (512) 393-9996 or by email to Traci Maxwell at [email protected].
