Local art studio announces Summer Art Camp schedule

Creative children ages 7 to 14 have the opportunity to explore and develop their artistic side this summer during camps at Casa de Linda Art Studio.

While artist and studio owner Linda Calvert Jacobson has been teaching and coordinating summer art camps for more than 15 years, this will be the third summer to host the camps at her studio in Wimberley.

“I’m so happy to offer these camps for families in the area,” said Jacobson, who relocated the Casa de Linda Art Studio from New Braunfels to Wimberley in early 2017.

This summer, six weeks of camps are scheduled between June 24 and Aug. 31. Each camp last 3 days, meeting Monday through Wednesday. Sessions for ages 7-10 are held in the morning from 10 a.m. to noon and sessions for ages 9-14 held in the afternoons from 1-4 p.m.

Each week, a different medium will be featured, starting with acrylic painting June 24-26 during which students will complete a painting of their favorite pet.

“This continues to be one of our most popular camps,” said Jacobson, who is also the instructor for both the morning and afternoon sessions.

Once registered, photos of the child’s pet will need to be emailed to Jacobson, who will then prepare the image for transferring to canvas.

“The younger children will trace the image of their pet onto canvas and then paint it, learning how to choose and mix colors, proper painting techniques and more,” she said. “The older children will learn a grid-drawing technique to enlarge and reproduce their pet image onto a larger canvas, which they will then paint. Techniques are ‘age appropriate’ and both yield amazing results.”

The following week, Lynette Clauser will again offer her fused glass and jewelry making camp.

“Lynette taught with me in New Braunfels for years and has agreed to come up to Wimberley to continue to offer these camps for children,” Jacobson said.

Other guests instructors include Barbara Worley, who will be teaching leather crafting July 15-17 and Liz Adkisson, who will offer a clay camp July 29-31.

“We did a leather crafting camp with Barbara our first summer in Wimberley and it was a bit hit,” Jacobson said. “Leather crafting is such a time-honored and almost lost art in today’s hi-tech world. I feel so lucky to have someone in the area who is both an expert and willing to pass along the techniques to the next generation.”

Ceramicist Adkisson is a Wimberley resident and joins the teaching staff at Casa de Linda for the first time this summer.

“Liz has experience in teaching children and is an accomplished ceramic artist,” Jacobson said. “I’m thrilled to have her on board.”

Jacobson will teach the remaining two weeks of camps.

July 8-10 will feature the art of paper mache with a “monsters-n-aliens” theme for the morning camps and then a zombie theme for the afternoon camps.

“Younger kids, ages 7-10, will create a large minion, like the guys in ‘Despicable Me,’ or some other alien or monster creature. Since they were filming ‘Fear the Walking Dead’ here for several months, I thought the older children, ages 9-14, would enjoy making their own 3-d zombie head, complete with bulging eyes and teeth,” Jacobson said.

The week of July 22-24 will be devoted to mosaics with age-appropriate projects for children to create projects using broken tiles, glass, beads and so on.

Seating is limited in all camps and pre-registration is required. Fees, which include all supplies and use of tools to complete projects, vary depending on the age group and how many camps and/or children are registered for each family.
