Litter

One of the things that probably disturbs most of us is seeing litter on our roadways. Is there any excuse for this? Yes, trucks lose trash that isn’t completely covered or tied down as directed by law. Even trucks authorized to haul trash often lose some. Most litter, however and most unfortunately, is simply thrown out by drivers and passengers. THIS IS LOATHSOME, UNNECESSARY, AND UNACCEPTABLE. As Bert Ray, and probably many others have said, WE CAN DO BETTER!

We want to congratulate and thank the groups and individuals who regularly pick up either through the Texas State Highway Adopt-A-Road program or through their own personally adopted neighborhood streets. Unfortunately, I have not checked the records to see who all of these groups and individuals are. Please let me know who you know and I will write a follow-up thank you account. For this column, here are just three of the groups I want to thank. In fact, all of us should thank them.

KAPS SCHOOL (Katherine Anne Porter school.) They have adopted a state highway for several years.

The WimDems (Wimberley Democrats). They pick up on RR12 from the junction down 2 miles. (This is the road I access almost daily so I am especially grateful)

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. They have adopted not just a 2 mile stretch, but a 4 mile stretch! (Personal note: this is my church but I can take no credit whatsoever for the faithful work they do.)

Kate’s Place. The employees pick up alongside Wayside Road.

Baccus Family. They have adopted Old Kyle Road.

Just a few of the individuals I know who pick up in their neighborhoods are Maria Hendrikson and her husband, Louise and Tom Bakofsky (I don’t know them but Jackie Mattice told me they do this.), Carol Howie, Janette Barlow, Patti Morgan, Nancy Henson, Rick Millinor and Sharon Carter. I know there are others so please let me hear from you who they are. Our roads are dangerous roads to work on so we can’t thank these people enough. YOU DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
