Lion’s Centennial Project

Wimberley has known for some time how valuable the Lions are to this community, and, just recently, they have once again shared their generosity, skills, and love with their gift of the rebuilding of the pocket park pavilion in the Ozona Bank parking lot. The pavilion and benches, which had been built originally by an Eagle Scout, were almost totally demolished in the Halloween flood of 2015.

The Lions took on this restoration project as a way to celebrate their 100th centennial anniversary. John Estepp, the President of the Lions at the time, became the general contractor. After submitting their initial drawings, the Lions received their commercial engineering approvals and permits from the city. The construction project lasted a little longer than expected because of weather delays. The work began in October of 2016 but even so, by mid- January, 2019, the pavilion and five bright blue benches were ready for public use.

John says the most unique feature of the reconstruction is the roof of the structure. If you look carefully, every angle of the roof looks a little different. John refers to it as a “3D Puzzle Box.”

From others, I learned that John Estepp is a perfectionist in his work, so, congratulations, John! Splendid work! Congratulations to all of the others who helped and Happy Centennial Wimberley Lions! We thank you for this wonderful gift and remembrance. Again, you are all beloved in this community and we are better because of you.
