Household Hazardous Waste

One goal of the Keep Texas Beautiful organization is to reduce waste by encouraging reuse and recycling. Proper disposal of household hazardous wastes is included in this goal. Keep Wimberley Beautiful is a member of Keep Texas Beautiful and hence has the same mission of reducing waste.

In Hays County household hazardous waste is collected for FREE at the San Marcos City Hall traffic yard (634 East Hopkins) twice per week. This collection site is across from the big HEB near the railroad tracks. The days household hazardous wastes are collected are Tuesday and Friday from noon until 3:30. No commercial waste is accepted.

Among the items the San Marcos facility collects are batteries, cell phones, degreasers, drain cleaners, fluorescent lights, paints, sharps, pesticides, and weed killers. Items NOT accepted include, compressed gas, computers, tvs, cylinders, medical waste (other than sharps), pharmaceuticals, tires and waste generated by a business. More information of items accepted can be found at

In keeping with the concept of reusing materials, they have a Reuse Facility (same address, 634 East Hopkins) . They encourage people to visit the Reuse Facility before buying materials for a home improvement project. The materials at the Reuse Facility are free.

Another way that Keep Wimberley Beautiful encourages reuse is by volunteering at the Village Thrift store at 450 River Road. When you donate items you are no longer using but are usable, they are sold to someone else who will use them. The money generated by selling used items funds the following organizations: Keep Wimberley Beautiful, PAWS, Habitat for Humanities, Wimberley Players and Emily Ann Theater and Gardens. Thus, when you donate or buy from the local thrift stores you are supporting your community as well as reducing waste. The Thrift store on RR 12 near the Wimberley Community Center supports the Senior Center activities in the Community Center.
