History of Keep Wimberley Beautiful

You have probably heard of Keep Wimberley Beautiful, but you may not know what we do. Our history began in 1992 when a small group of us were having coffee in Cypress Creek Café. We noticed that mud piled up along the curbs in the center of the square and weeds were happily growing there. Litter had also accumulated. We wondered when someone was going to do something about that. Suddenly, we realized that we weren’t even a real town. We had no local governance, not street sweepers, no centralized equipment to do anything with. We all loved and cared about our community, though, so we realized that we were the “somebodies” who could do something about the problem. After our coffee session, we went out, picked up litter and pulled up weeds. The following Monday, when the shops were closed and traffic was very light, we went back, properly dressed for “work” and toting bags and tools. We cleaned up the square and decided we would try to do that as often as necessary.

Today, we are an official 501 C 3 non-profit entity and we are an affiliate of Keep Texas Beautiful, the statewide organization that promotes the same programs we do. Those programs include beautification projects, community cleanups and roadside adoptions, recycling, environmental education, and community pride. Over the course of the years, we have won three highly coveted statewide awards for our involvement and participation.

Today, our community is relatively clean, green, still somewhat country looking and environmentally healthy. We thank each and everyone of the individuals, groups and businesses that have accomplished this. Please keep up the good work.
