The ghosts of Wimberley Radio

A young Orson Wells proved the power of mass communication when he and the Mercury Theatre created mass hysteria with the broadcast of H.G. Wells “War of the Worlds” in 1938. The broadcast was done as if it was a real newscast, alarming American as if it was really happening even though the program, at station breaks told listeners in that it was only a radio play.

“Later it was translated into Portuguese, broadcast in Brazil and it happened again, there. It showed the importance of radio,” Mike August said, KWVH’s organizer of a project to tell live ghost stories on the radio.

On the eightieth anniversary of that broadcast, KWVH 91.4, the local radio station is asking local listeners for their own ghostly radio plays and ideas. Along with the help of the Wimberley Players the stories will be broadcast live on Halloween.

“So far there has been interest in the project, but we’d like even more people to help out…people that like to create great images, love to write and loves to build suspense,” August said.

All types of volunteers are needed including foley operators (named after sound-effects artist Jack Foley,) which is the reproduction of everyday sounds such as using coconuts for horses hoof beats or walking on sand to recreate marching people. “This is going to be a lot of fun and will add to the festivities that happen in Wimberley around Halloween,” Mike Crusham, KWVH’s Station Manager said.

But the biggest need right now is for written scripts of ghost stories.

With Devil’s Backbone nearby and other ghostly happenings in the area, there are a lot of ghost stories that have been told orally, and really just need to be put down on paper.

“This is exciting to be a part of…I’d like this to begin a yearly or semi-yearly event,” August said. He’d like to do a series on Texas Rangers in history, not the baseball club but the real ones.

But right now the call is going out for ghost stories, to be performed by the Wimberley Players live on the radio on Halloween. It’s an exciting opportunity to be a part of.
