Free turkey dinner – A Wimberley Tradition

Thanksgiving is a very American holiday, a holiday that every American looks forward to and savors – the thoughts of turkey, gravy, pumpkin pie and cranberries. It’s like you can almost smell the aroma.

This thought entered the mind of local good guy Dave Lewis thirty-one years ago. He thought that Thanksgiving was too special, as was the Wimberley Valley. “How about a free Thanksgiving dinner for anybody who for one reason or another wanted one.

“It’s for the community, in the easiest terms. It’s for people who can’t be with family, don’t have family or don’t like their family,” Lewis said. “It’s a real, paidfor by the community. It’s unbelievably heartwarming. It is what Wimberley embodies, companionship and the need to be together… on a spiritual level, it’s beautiful.”

But don’t think that being served a free dinner is what everyone wants. Some valley residents love to serve and to volunteer and have for many years.

There are many parts to volunteer for: cooks, chief bottle washers, tea or water servers, putting pumpkin pies down and watching them disappear quickly, and lots of neat positions. All these not only provide a smile on a volunteer, but they also get more than one back.

Volunteers are needed and meet on site at 10 a.m. at the Community Center, cooks meet at 8 a.m. the day of Thanksgiving. Wednesday the day before the holiday decorating volunteers meet at the Community Center at 3 p.m.

Here’s what is on the menu on Thanksgiving Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Wimberley Community Center: smoked turkey, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes and dessert including pumpkin pie. Even more, if y0u can’t make it, it can be delivered to you by calling or texting David Lewis at (512) 923- 5380. Donations are accepted year round at the Ozona Bank or on site Thanksgiving Day. “We’ve been serving neighbors, over 500 neighbors year after year,” Lewis said.
