Del Castillo at Susanna’s Kitchen

On January 17, Del Castillo, an Austin-based band known for their blend of sounds including rock, flamenco, Latin, blues, and world-music into a powerful, original take will make their Susanna’s Kitchen debut.

The band, led by guitar-playing brothers Rick and Mark Del Castillo, has been bridging the gap between Spanish and English sounds for some 20 years. Fusing together rock, Tejano, and a large dose of blues, the band has enjoyed a highly successful career in two languages, buoyed by the brothers’ guitar work which Rolling Stone describes as “tumbling brilliance on nylon-string guitar,” reminiscent of “early Santana (with an assist from the Gipsy Kings).”

In just the first five years of the band’s career from the release of their first CD, Brothers of the Castle, Del Castillo received an astonishing 18 awards – including SXSW/Austin Music “Album of the Year” Awards for Vida (2002) and Brotherhood (2006), “Band of the Year (2003)”, and ASCAP’S “Best Independent Group of the Year (2005)”. Their last full-length album was 2012’s Live at El Lokal – Zurich. The band has toured nationally and internationally, headlining a number of music festivals. Many of their originals have been included in movies and TV shows by filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and others.

The band took a much-needed hiatus in 2014 after an exhausting touring schedule, with much uncertainty over whether Del Castillo would play together again.

The band, now reunited with longtime charismatic frontman Alex Ruiz providing lead vocals, began performing together again early last year, focusing on playing music and having fun together. They are now recording new music with the brothers’ mesmerizing guitar driven songs.
