Danforth Junior High sells lemonade for charity

It’s the beginning of the warm seasons and everyone is looking forward to the end of school. So how do you keep eighth graders engaged and still learning? Sell lemonade is an answer. The math classes of Karen Nance and Kasey Tatum did just that.

Each April since 2016, the Eight Grade Math classes sell lemonade for a grade. From April 23 through 25, twenty six teams competed to see who could sell the most lemonade, snacks and baked goods.

According to the article put in the Danforth newsletter the goal are:

• To apply 8th grade math skills in a significant way to produce a 30% or better profit margin.

• Learn to work as a contributing team member.

• Gather data so that we can analyze it and use our 8th grade math lessons from this year.

• Giving back by raising money for charities that are meaningful in our students’ lives.

The twenty six teams competed on one of the three days. The charities chosen this year were St. Jude’s hospital for national and local WAG. Over the four years they have give over $7,000 to charity. This year they had a one day record of $1,800 and hoped to go over $2,500 this year.

It is one of those events that the whole school enjoys and looks forward to.
