Carolyn Wonderland at Susanna’s Kitchen

Carolyn Wonderland is a musical force. Her powerful voice evokes Janis Joplin and is an instrument in its own right. Known for her soulful vocals, she has the guitar skills of a Stevie Ray Vaughn, and has been called an “insightful, gutsy, intelligent songwriter with an extremely versatile talent that spans just about every genre you can name.” Susanna’s Kitchen Coffeehouse is delighted to welcome her to the stage on February 20.

Growing up in Houston with a mother who was a singer in a band, Wonderland began playing her mom’s vintage Martin guitar when other girls were dressing dolls. Now based out of Austin but touring nationally and internationally, Wonderland has played “Austin City Limits,” as well as performing as a solo artist and fronting bands. She’s recorded a number of albums, including most recently her 2017 album “Moon Goes Missing.”

Considered primarily a blues artist, Wonderland incorporates elements of country, swing, zydeco, surf, gospel, soul, and cumbia into her soulful mix. A multi-instrumentalist, she plays trumpet, accordion, piano, mandolin, lap steel, and some songs even feature her ability to whistle.

Rockzillaworld Magazine’s Dante Dominick writes, “Carolyn Wonderland’s live shows are just outright phenomenal. Top notch, five-stars, off the meter – whatever the cliché…Her voice can be as beautiful as an angel and as powerful as a Class 5 hurricane all within the drop of a hat.” Another reviewer says of her that “she sings like Janis and plays guitar like Hendrix.”

You won’t want to miss Carolyn Wonderland’s Susanna’s Kitchen debut Thursday, February 20. Located at the corner of RR 12 and CR 1492 (at the Wimberley United Methodist Church), doors open by 7:00 pm and the concert begins at 7:30 pm.
