Blue Plumbago

I am always looking for flowers that provide good color. Although I no longer have any in my yard right now, I have noticed some beautiful Blue Plumbago blooming around Wimberley. Plumbago, a native of Africa, is usually quite easy to grow. It is deer resistant, drought resistant after being fairly well established, and it blooms for a good amount of time, especially in the summer months.

It can be pruned for shaping and more blooms. There are several short videos about these plants on the internet (Just type in Plumbago). In one video I viewed, the gardener was shearing the plants, even as it was in its vanishing bloom stage.

These plants, actually a shrub, can grow 6 to 10 feet all with a spread of 8 to 10 feet. Most in the Wimberley area, of the ones I have seen anyway, do not grow this big. My own spread out to about 3 feet and also about 3 feet tall. Although they need some sun, they do best in a partially shaded location.
