Big Band for library

The golden sounds of big band era music enticed dancers and listeners alike to the Wimberley Community Center with music everyone loves to hear. The newly reorganized Wimberley Valley Big Band (formerly the Hill Country Jazz Band) hosted a free dance on Sunday, October 28. About 100 people attended, and most ended up on the dance floor at some point.

The Wimberley Valley Big Band, directed by Doug Gillory, of 21 volunteer musicians from the Wimberley Valley area, ranging in age from 16-90. Each is an excellent musician in his or her own right, and together the Band produces an impressive sound. The Wimberley Valley Big Band provides free dance/ concerts to the Wimberley community on Sunday afternoons at the Wimberley Community Center as well as playing for fundraising and other functions. An exciting new offering will be the first annual Wimberley New Year’s Eve Celebration and Dance, occurring on New Year’s Eve at the Wimberley Community Center. After the first number (“I Can’t Stop Loving You” by Count Basie), one longtime listener to the Band applauded the band’s new sound, “This is a brand new day!”

The next Wimberley Valley Big Band dance/concert will be on November 11 when the Band plays for a fundraising event benefiting the Wimberley Village Library expansion project. This event will take place at the Wimberley Community Center from 3-5 pm on November 11, 2018. Tickets are available at the Wimberley Library or at the door.

Future dance/concerts will include a free dance on December 9 from 3-5 pm at the Community Center, and the First Annual Wimberley New Year’s Eve Celebration and Dance on December 31 from 9pm until 12:30 am. Mark your calendars and be sure to come out to enjoy.
