On July 14, SMTX’s First Tuesday Films will present the documentary “Also Starring Austin” at the Price Center in San Marcos. This documentary weaves together scenes from nearly 50 years of locally shot films.
For filmmakers and history buffs alike, it features commentary from some of Austin's well-known producers, directors and industry leaders and examines Austin’s history through the cinema lens. It also chronicles Austin's changing landscape and, equally, its unique and enduring culture.
From Tobe Hooper's first film “Eggshells,” to classic films from Richard Linklater and Robert Rodriguez, to underground rarities and star-driven Hollywood fare, locally-shot films provide a rare ongoing time capsule of Austin.
The 90-minute documentary from Director Mike Blizzard and Producer Lara Morgan provides a tribute to Austin’s changing appearance and explores how movie scenes helped shape modern Austin. It features Richard Linklater, Robert Rodriguez, Elizabeth Avellan, Willie Nelson, Mike Judge, Tobe Hooper and Kim Henkel.
There will be a post-film question and answer session with Director Mike Blizzard, Producer Lara Morgan and Literary Curator of The Wittliff Collections, Carrie Fountain.
