City to hold hearings on STR regulations

The City of Wimberley will hold public hearings about the proposed amendments to the city’s Short-Term Rental, or STR, regulations. The hearings will provide an opportunity for residents, property owners and interested members of the community to review the proposed changes and provide comments before any final action is considered.

The proposed amendments are based on recommendations developed by the city’s Short-Term Rental Committee, which was established to review existing STR regulations and provide recommendations regarding the future regulation of short-term lodging uses within the community.

The proposed zoning amendments under consideration include removing the ability for property owners to ask for a Short-Term Rental 2, Non-Owner Occupied, Conditional Use Permit, or CUP, within the Single-Family Residential 2, or R-2, and Single-Family Residential 3, R-3, zoning districts.

The zoning amendments also include allowing short-term lodging facilities with up to 30 units as a permitted use by right within the Commercial Low Impact, C1, Commercial Moderate Impact, C2, and Commercial High Impact, C3, zoning districts.

The public hearings are part of the city’s public process for considering comprehensive zoning amendments. Community input received during these hearings will help inform future recommendations, however no final action will be taken during the July public hearings.

The public hearings are scheduled to take place during the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, Thursday, July 9, at 6 p.m. and the 6 p.m. City Council meeting on July 16. The meetings will be held in the city hall council chambers, 221 Stillwater Rd.
Additional public notices and information about the proposed zoning amendments will be provided in agreement with state law and city requirements. Property owner notification, website posting and newspaper publication will occur as required for the comprehensive zoning change process.

Final consideration and potential action on the proposed amendments are anticipated during the August Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council meetings.

Residents are encouraged to attend the public hearings and share their comments as the city continues this community discussion. For additional information, please visit the cityofwimberley.com or contact city hall at 512-847-0025.
