On May 7 the Wimberley City council approved a redesign of Old Kyle Road, between RM 12 and Blue Hole Lane, as part of the Hays County Wimberley Valley Trails initiative.
The original project, supported by the city in 2022, and shaped by community input, will convert Old Kyle Road to a one-way road with a two-lane bike path, continuous sidewalks and various streetscape enhancements.
The updated design will allow for pedestrian and cyclist travel options, realign and repave the roadway, incorporate native landscaping and streetscape beautification, and will include lighting, signage and wayfinding signage.
Since the completion of the original design, the tree in the middle of Old Kyle road west of Blue Hole Ln., previously identified for preservation, has died. The proposed redesign will remove the dead tree, preserve 7 to 8 other healthy trees and will reduce the amount of right-of-way needed. The additional design costs are expected to be offset by savings in right-of-way costs and will not impact previously awarded Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization funding.
