Shoppers browsing the deals to be had at the Wimberley Thrift Shop on RR 12 might not know that it has a long track record of supporting activities for older adults at the Wimberley Community Center.

Last week’s Chamber of Commerce event, hosted by the thrift shop, allowed chamber members to discover the history and purpose behind its existence, thanks to WSCAI Board Member Linda Germain.

The shop has been operated by Wimberley Senior Citizen Activities, Inc., or WSCAI, since the late 1980s. In fact, the organization turns 40 this year.

WSCAI was founded by Wimberley founding families of what was then the Wimberley Village to create places and activities for older adults to meet and engage. WSCAI, (WHIS-kee) is behind the senior activities and programs at the community center. One of their primary programs is The Circle of Friends.

Each Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., older adults can engage in games, music, exercise and crafts with Circle of Friends volunteers, allowing their caregivers a break. According to volunteers, the live music program is particularly vibrant, thanks to Paul Cones, a professional musician, whose contacts provide plenty of talent.

Finding treasures and bargains at the Wimberley Thrift Shop is doubly satisfying knowing it benefits older friends and family.
