For many weeks, master gardeners in Hays county have been in their greenhouses and gardens and on their porches and patios sprouting native seeds and taking cuttings from their own plants for the Spring Plant and Tree Sale this week.
Donating their time and skills, master gardener volunteers are trained and certified through the Texas A & M University Agrilife Extension Service. Taking the guesswork out of choosing which plants will thrive in the local climate and protect the ecoregion, volunteers grow native and adaptive plants and Texas Superstars especially suited to Hays County. Offered in the sale are vegetables, herbs and a wide variety of ornamental trees, ground covers, grasses, perennials, shrubs and succulents.
The online sale began Sunday March 15 and will continue through March 22. Shoppers purchase plants by going to http://haysgardener.square.site to scroll through photos of the plants that are offered and pay for them online. Volunteers fill orders until buyers pick them up at the Budaful Farmers Market, 204 San Antonio St. in Buda, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 22. Buyers can also purchase plants during the pick up hours, but the choices will be limited. Purchasers will have an opportunity to “Ask a Gardener” questions about their own garden.
Proceeds from the sale fund Master Gardener continuing education programs and community training classes for those interested in learning more about gardening and landscaping.
