Student wants to smarten up downtown drains

Avianne Hershberger wants to teach Wimberley that “only rain goes down the drain.”

The Wimberley High School student floated a plan to city council last month to paint targeted storm drains with ecological messages that teach citizens that pollutants, trash, pet waste, oil and chemicals don’t belong in storm drains.

With messages such as “Let’s Keep it Clean” and “Where Will Your Water Go?” Hershberger wants to drive home the message that contaminants from storm drains find their way to aquatic ecosystems.

Her “Paint the Drains” campaign is designed to engage artists, community members and children to adopt actions that further the goals of Environmental Stewardship. Key ideas of Environmental Stewardship include focusing on long-term ecological health over short-term gain and taking actions, both individual and collective, that often go beyond legal requirements.

Hershberger, who is a Keep Wimberley Beautiful Youth Ambassador, proposed nine locations and told the council that she had secured funding for the project through an anonymous donor. The city council voted 5 - 0 to endorse the project.
