First Tuesday SMTX and the Wimberley Players have teamed up to bring the story of one of Austin’s most iconic live music venues to Wimberley.
“Nothing Stays the Same: The Story of the Saxon Pub,” time travels through the last 30 years of live music in South Austin. Amid rising rents and property taxes, the 2019 documentary chronicles a time when the pub faced being forced into a new space, the death knell for most music clubs.
The 71-minute documentary is told through the lens of its owner Joe Ables, its regulars, staff and beloved musicians like the late Joe Ely and W.C. Clark, as well as Bob Schneider, Patrice Pike, Guy Forsyth, Hector Ward, Carolyn Wonderland, The Resentments, Johnny Nicholas, , Robynn Shayne and others. Is the writing on the wall for this music mecca?
Filmed by Wimberley’s own Jeffrey Brown, Jeff Sandmann and Lisa Kay Pfannenstiel, the documentary premiered at SXSW 2019 and won its Music Doc Prize.
After the film, there will be an in-person Question and Answer period with the filmmakers and special guest, Patrice Pike. KWVH’s Coach Smith will serve as moderator.
The film screens from 7 to 9 p.m.; doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $20, available at wimberleyplayers.org under “Special Events” on the upper menu. The Wimberley Players is located at 450 Old Kyle Rd.
