Staff Reports

In 2013, Texas women shared real stories to help Texas State Senator Wendy Davis filibuster in defense of women’s access to reproductive healthcare. As the capitol filled to capacity for the first time in its history, people from all over the world tuned in. Forcing debate on the bill provided citizens a view of the process and a role in demanding accountability from their elected representatives. People were activated, lives were transformed and history was made.

To tell that story, First Tuesday SMTX will present the documentary “Shouting Down Midnight,” at 7 p.m. on March 3 at The Price Center, 222 W. San Antonio, in San Marcos.

Directed by Gretchen Stoeltje, viewers will watch as Senator Davis stood for 13 hours, reading letters from women while she filibustered an anti-abortion bill which would dramatically restrict Texas women’s access, not just to abortion, but to needed health care services. Since that day in 2013, Stoeltje followed the women to understand how that day changed their lives, and why the fight for reproductive freedom is more important than ever.

After the film, Stoeltje, along with Dr. Jessica Pliley, Professor of Women’s and Gender History at Texas State University will answer questions.

Ticket are $9 and available at firsttuesdaysmtx.com. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., complimentary food and drink is available at 6:30, and the film starts at 7. World Premiere — SXSW
