The district championship is coming back home to Texan Gym as Wimberley defeated Davenport 56-50 in one of the most highly anticipated basketball games in recent memory.
The Texans finish the regular season with a 34-2 overall record and a perfect district record at 10-0.
Wimberley trailed at the end of the first quarter down 13-10 but a rally by the Texans led to the score being tied at 26-26 at halftime.
Wimberley’s defense held Davenport to just seven points in the third quarter as the Texans entered halftime up 37-33.
It proved to be the difference maker as Wimberley outscored Davenport 19-17 in the fourth quarter to seal the win at 56-50.
Senior Paul Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in scoring with 21 points followed by senior Micah Birdsong with seven.
Junior Nathan Baker led the team in rebounds with 11.
The Texans enter the playoffs as the No. 12 ranked team in the state, scoring an average of 72.1 points per game while holding opponents to just 43.8 points per game.
Wimberley will be one of the favorites in Region IV of the 4A Division II playoffs along with No. 2 ranked LaMarque who enters with a 36-1 overall record.
Wimberley will take on Liberty Hill Legacy Ranch in the first round of the playoffs Monday night at Hays High School.
