“Deathtrap,” the celebrated dark comedy thriller by Ira Levin, will open on the Wimberley Players stage February 20 and continue through March 15. First premiering on Broadway in 1978, “Deathtrap” quickly became one of the longest-running thrillers in Broadway history and remains a favorite for its razor-sharp wit, intricate plotting and jaw-dropping twists.
The play centers on Sidney Bruhl, a once-successful playwright now desperate for another hit. When a former student submits a script that promises instant success, Sidney begins to contemplate a shocking solution — one that sets off a chain reaction of deception, betrayal and deadly surprises. As the story unfolds, alliances shift and identities blur, proving that in “Deathtrap,” nothing is ever quite what it seems.
This Wimberley Players production is directed by the BroadwayWorld-Austin, award-winning Rebecca Woods, whose vision brings fresh energy and precision to Levin’s masterful thriller.
“Deathtrap challenges theatrical conventions,” said Woods. “It also challenges both the characters and the audience to stay one step ahead, and just when you think you know where it’s going, it turns the tables.”
The show brings a talented cast of new faces as well as veterans of the Wimberley Players stage: in the role of Sidney is Greg Baglia and in the role of Myra is Carla Daws. Taylor Lueckenotte plays Clifford and Grace Crane plays Helga. In the role of Porter is Jim Bast.
Performances are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults and $20 for students with valid ID. Group discounts are also available for parties of eight or more.
“Deathtrap” is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection.
