WHS brings home UIL championship trophy

Last week the Wimberley High School Academic University Interscholastic League team competed at the Medina Valley High School in Castroville. WHS won the meet with a 100-plus point cushion over the second-place team of Boerne Champion High School.

First Place Team winners were:

Myles Van De Walle, 1st place; Corbin Willis, 3rd place; and Oliver Benamau, 4th place.

First Place Team Science: Coached by Laquita Sellers

Zorah Schwalb, 1st place; Hunter Hodgson, 5th place; and Jack Malone, 6th place. Jack Malone was Top Biology Scorer and Zorah Schwalb, won 2nd in Biology and 2nd in Chemistry.

First Place Team Speech and Debate: Coached by Kyla De Leon

The team earned 122 points. The second place team was Boerne Champion with 54 points.

Poetry: Emma Schmidt, 1st place; Austin Howard, 2nd place.

Prose-Walker Williams, 1st place; Carys Bowling, 2nd place.

Extemporaneous Informative Speaking: Anna Krause, 1st place; Austin Howard, 2nd place; and Bella Bober, 4th place.

Extemporaneous Persuasive Speaking: Carys Bowling, 1st place; Nathan Valley, 3rd place; and Abrah Belkin, 4th place.

Lincoln Douglas Debate: Nathan Valley, 2nd place; Anna Krause, 3rd place; Bella Bober, Quarterfinalist; and Abrah Belkin, Quarterfinalist.

2nd Place Team Current Issues and Events: Coached by Bo Bowman

Ellie Jennings, 3rd place; and Noah Ramirez, 5th place.

4th Place Team Journalism Team Results: Coached by Laquita Sellers

Copy Editing: Carys Bowling, 5th place.

Headline Writing: Josh Cisneros, 4th place; and Carys Bowling, 6th place.

Accounting: Coached by Roberto Frontera

Nate Riser, 2nd place; and Madeline Plant, 3rd place.

(Important to note that Nate and Madeline’s score combined was higher than the 1st place team score but because they weren’t a team of 3 they couldn’t win team)

Mathematics: Coached by Roberto Frontera

Zorah Schwalb, 3rd place winner.

Computer Science: Coached by Brannon Gilley

Josh Cisneros, 4th place in the Novice Division.

Spelling and Vocabulary: Coached by Jennifer Gold

Urvi Dutta, 2nd place; and Katherine Gallaher, 4th place.
