Texans take 2nd place at Hoopfest

The Texans finished second at the annual Wimberley Hoopfest Tournament over the holiday weekend.

Wimberley improves to 20-2 for the season.

The Texans opened up tournament play against the Lockhart Lions with Wimberley winning 67-34.

Junior Nathan Baker led the team in scoring with 18 points while junior Reece Wortham was second with 14.

Seniors Paul Gumbert-Mendoza and Holden Crawford were third with 10 points each.

Senior Micah Birdsong led the team in rebounds with eight while Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in assists with 10 to complete the double-double.

Wimberley finished up Day 1 of the tournament by taking on the Shepperton Gators of Australia.

It was another blowout win for the Texans, who won 81-60.

Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in scoring with 20 points followed by Wortham with 15 and Baker with 14.

Gumbert-Mendoza also led the team in rebounds with eight while junior Harley Peacock led the team in assists with five.

Wimberley started Day 2 of Hoopfest with a showdown against the Glen Rose Tigers.

However, it was the Tigers getting the upper hand, defeating Wimberley 49-44. The loss snapped a 17-game winning streak for the Texans.

Gumbert-Mendoza and Wortham led the team in scoring with 13 points each. Gumbert-Mendoza also led the team in rebounds with nine, followed by Baker with eight.

Wortham led the team in steals with six.

Wimberley closed out Hoopfest against powerhouse and former rival Liberty Hill.

The Texans ended Hoopfest on a high note as Wimberley defeated Liberty Hill 72-59.

Baker led the team in scoring with 22 points, followed by Gumbert-Mendoza with 19 points.

Wortham was third with 13 points and Crawford was second with 10 points.

Wortham led the team in rebounds and assists with seven and 13 to complete the double-double.

Wimberley will be back on the road this week with a Tuesday night showdown against Poth and a Friday night matchup against Giddings before the Texans start district play.

Tipoff for Poth starts at 8 p.m. while tip-off for Giddings starts at 7:30 p.m.
