Texans take first place at Battle of Bay Tournament

The Texans took first place at the Battle of the Bay tournament in Aransas Pass this past weekend. Wimberley enters the week ranked No. 10 in the state in Class 4A.

The No. 10-ranked Texans took home the Battle of the Bay tournament championship, running a clean sweep to bring home first place.

Wimberley improves to 9-1 for the season.

The Texans started the week at home against the Cuero Gobblers, winning 91-24 and scoring the most points for the season.

Senior Paul Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in scoring with 24 points followed by senior Holden Crawford with 13. Sophomore Jack Dudgeon was third in scoring with 10.

Junior Nathan Baker led the team in rebounds with five while junior Reece Wortham led the team in both assists and steals with six apiece.

Wimberley opened up the Battle of the Bay tournament play against Gainesville, winning 66-59. Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in scoring and rebounds with 24 points and 11 boards to complete the double-double. Gumbert-Mendoza also led the team in assists with six.

Wortham was second in scoring with 17 points while Baker was second in rebounds with 10.

The Texans closed out Friday play against Corpus Christi Tuloso-Midway with Wimberley winning 83-51.

On the second day of the tournament, Wimberley battled 6A school Burleson. Using a strong defensive effort in the second half, the Texans defeated the Elks 62-49.

Wortham led the team in scoring with 26 points followed by Gumbert-Mendoza with 13 points. Baker was third in scoring with 11. Gumbert-Mendoza also led the team in rebounds with 10 to complete another double-double for the week while Wortham led the team in assists with seven. Baker and senior Micah Birdsong were second in rebounding with seven each.

Later in the day, the Texans defeated the Orange Grove Bulldogs 79-36.

Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in scoring with 19 points followed by junior Harley Peacock with 15. Senior Jacob Pool was third in scoring with 14 while Crawford was fourth with 11.

Junior Jack Malone led the team in rebounds with five while Peacock led the team in assists with four and steals with six.

To clinch the championship on Saturday, the Texans defeated the La Vernia Bears 57-42.

Gumbert-Mendoza led the team in scoring with 19 points while also leading the team in rebounds with 8, assists with 6 and steals with 6. Wortham was second in scoring with 14.

Wimberley was back on the road Tuesday night against Bastrop before they will play in the Lago Vista Tournament this weekend.
