Texans sweep rival Canyon Lake and Salado to play for the state championship
For the tenth time in program history, the Texans will play for a state championship.
Wimberley is heading back to Garland to defend their state title as the Texans swept arch-rival Canyon Lake in the Regional Final and swept topranked Salado in the State-Semifinals.
The Texans set a new program record for most wins in a single season, improving to 46-5 overall while extending their winning streak to 31-games. Wimberley also enters the state title game having won 15 sets in a row during the postseason.
On Tuesday, the Texans faced off against their rivals from the Devils Backbone in Canyon Lake for the 4A D2 Region IV title. It marked the first time both rivals have met in a regional title game.
Despite a close third set, the Texans swept the Hawks 3-0 [25-17, 25-10, 26-24] to capture the program’s 12th regional title.
Freshman Trinity Laney led the team in kills with 11 followed by senior Mariah McCoy with 10. Senior Lili Sandoval was third in kills with eight.
The senior duo of Skylar Herring and Carson Peoples continued to power the Texan offense, combining for 32 assists. Herring led the team with 17 while Peoples was second with 15.
On defense, senior Ashton Shipman held the backline with a team high 10 digs. Laney was second with seven followed by Peoples and Sandoval with six each.
Junior Ellen Watson led the team in total blocks with three.
Advancing to the state-semifinals, the Texans faced off with the Salado Eagles in an highly anticipated matchup.
The Eagles won the Region III title and entered the playoffs ranked third in the state while the Texans were ranked second.
Both Salado and Wimberley met earlier in the season at the Glen Rose Tournament where they played twice with the teams splitting their games.

With a state title berth on the line, Wimberley swept Salado 3-0 [25-19, 25-21, 25-13] and punched their ticket to Garland.
Laney led the team in kills with 15 followed by Sandoval with eight. Peoples and Herring continued their work at the net with a combined 25 assists. Peoples led the team with 15 and Herring with 10.
Shipman continued her hard work on the backline with a team high 12 digs followed by Herring with 10 to complete the doubledouble. Laney and Sandoval were third in digs with nine each. Junior Skylar Mears led the team in blocks with five.
Looking to complete the back to back championships, the Texans will face the highly touted Eagle Mountain Knights, the No. 1 ranked team in 4A Division II.
The Knights enter the title game with a 3711 overall record, winning 4A District 7. Much like the Texans, the Knights enter the game having won 15 sets in a row through their dominating run. Tip-off for Wimberley- Eagle Mountain is set for 6 p.m. Friday at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.
