Wimberley fell in the final game of the regular season, falling to the Lago Vista Vikings 21-17 in another thrilling game for the Texans.
The Texans finish the season with a 6-4 overall record with eight of their games ending within onepossession. Wimberley finished tied for second place in District 13 4A Division II behind Salado. Lago Vista finishes the season with a 6-4 overall record but misses the playoffs after tying with Gonzales who owns the tiebreaker.
The first quarter was a defensive battle as neither team was able to score. Lago Vista’s first drive made it inside the 20-yard line, but they were kept off the scoreboard when junior defensive back Carlon Helms made the interception in the end zone to give the ball back to Wimberley.
On the Texans’ first drive of the second quarter, quarterback Jackson Parker hit wide receiver Bennett German for a 60-yard pass to put Wimberley inside Lago Vista territory. Later in the drive, running back Maverick Jacobs bulldozed his way in for a four-yard touchdown run to put Wimberley up 7-0 after the extra point kick from Bo Holeman.
Lago Vista answered back on their next drive. Marching down to the 34-yard line, the Vikings scored on the long touchdown pass, tying the game at 7-7.
The Texans made one final drive before halftime. Driving down to the Lago Vista 15-yard line, Holeman made a 32yard field goal, giving the Texans back the lead at 10-7 with less than a minute remaining in the first half.
In the third quarter, the defensive slugfest continued before the Vikings could finally answer. Lago Vista struck again with an 80-yard touchdown pass, putting the Vikings back up 14-10.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Texans struck again. Following a hard-nose run to get down to the one-yard line, junior running back Josh Belanger scored the critical touchdown. After Holeman’s kick, the Texans led 17-14.
But the Vikings scored again in dramatic fashion. On the ensuing kickoff, the Vikings returned the ball 84 yards for the touchdown, giving Lago Vista the lead at 21-17.
The kickoff return for the touchdown proved to be the game winning score as Wimberley was unable to answer back leading to the defeat.
Jacobs led the team in rushing with 29 carries for 101 yards and one touchdown followed by Belanger with four carries for 22 yards and one touchdown. Parker led the team in passing with 237 yards. German caught six passes for 154 yards.
Helms led the team in total tackles with eight including seven solo tackles and one interception.
Despite finishing tied for second place with Jarrell, the Texans will enter the playoffs as the No. 2 seed in District 13 due to Wimberley owning the tiebreaker over the Cougars.
Wimberley will start the playoffs against the Carrizo Springs Wildcats. The Wildcats finished in third place in District 14 Class 4A D2 with a 46 overall record.
Kickoff for Wimberley- Carrizo Springs is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Von Ormy’s Southwest Legacy Stadium in San Antonio.
