Hill Country Community Band to Present Concert of Western Favorites November 15 and 22 The Hill Country Community Band will present “Prairie Passions, Winds of the Wild Heart” in two local venues on Saturday, November 15, at 7 p.m. at the Wimberley Valley Winery, 2825 Lone Man Mountain Road in Driftwood, and on Saturday, November 22, at 2 p.m. at the Wimberley First Baptist Church, 15951 Winters Mill Parkway. The program includes many “Wild West” favorites including, “The Cowboys Overture” by John Williams, from the motion picture, “The Cowboys,” featuring John Wayne. The music transports listeners to experience the joys and hardships of cowboy life as a Montana cattleman.
Other Western favorites include “Hoe-Down,” by Aaron Copland and the “American Overture for Band,” by Joseph Jenkins. “American Riversongs,” by Pierre La Plante, was inspired by music of an earlier time, when the rivers and waterways were the lifelines of a growing nation, and includes “Down the River” and “Shenandoah.”
Ennio Morricone’s work, “Moment for Morricone,” draws on melodies from two spaghetti westerns, “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly,” and “Once Upon a Time in the West.”
A second piece by Morricone, “Gabriel’s Oboe,” will feature band member Faith Cuminato on the oboe with a solo that evokes a sense of longing, melancholy and ultimately, hope.
The program will conclude with Karl King’s “Rough-Riders March,” which was a tribute to President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt and the volunteer cavalrymen who became known as his “Rough Riders.” The HCCB is directed by Dr. Manuel Arambula, and the concerts will be family- friendly and free to all. Parents are encouraged to bring the entire family.
