Collection Conundrum
There are many people who enjoy collecting various keepsakes or treasures. Some you may know about and others not so much. To show or not to show, that is the question. I found that some people side eye you depending on what you collect. For example, people collect old newspaper ads. They may have a drawer full, but since they are just piles of old ads, they don’t take up much room. There are people who collect fountain pens. Again, these can be kept in a drawer and no one is the wiser, unless they decide to mention them. These are secret collectors.
Then there are people who collect bigger things like gnomes. They may have the same number of collectables as the people with old ads or fountain pens, but instead of keeping them in a drawer (impossible), they decorate their yard with them. They proudly get their street name changed to Gnome Place. Here comes the side eyes.
Collections of even larger items, such as typewriters or sewing machines are even more difficult to hide or display without people having to walk over and around them. Anyone allowed to see these collections not only have side eyes but eyes that reach for their forehead. Again, they may have the same number of collectables as the pen and ad folks, who smugly keep their collections hidden.
The largest collected items are the old cars. There are folks who love their antique cars, like Jay Leno. I think he has so many cars, he had to rent a three-story garage or something like that. Other collectors just bring out one car at a time to show at car shows and meet-ups. Even if people saw their whole collection, there would probably be no side eye looks. There would be admiration and even envy at this magnificent collection.
The moral of this story is that size matters. Collections that include small or very large items are looked at favorably. Those mid-sized items we collect cause questioning looks and multiple side eyes. It is worth knowing this before you collect.
