Texans capture 26th district title in program history

The Texans 27 game winning streak will march into the playoffs as Wimberley swept both Bandera and Canyon Lake to capture the 4A District 26 championship.

Wimberley improves to 41-5 overall and concludes district play with a perfect 100 record while also winning the 26th district championship in program history.

Wimberley started the week on the road against Bandera, as the Texans defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 [2517, 25-14, 25-9].

Senior Lili Sandoval led the team in kills with 13 followed by freshman Trinity Laney with eight. Senior Cameron Thames was third in kills with six.

Senior Skylar Herring led the team in assists with 25 followed by senior Carson Peoples with 11.

On defense, senior Ashton Shipman led the team in digs with nine with Laney coming in second with eight. Sandoval, Cameron Thames and junior Kara Thames were tied for third with five digs each.

At the net, Laney and junior Victoria Jones led the team in total blocks with two.

Wimberley closed out the season on the road Friday as the Texans made the trip across the Devil’s Backbone to battle arch rival Canyon Lake.

The Texans finished the season with another district sweep, beating the Hawks 3-0 [25-18, 25-17, 25-14].

Sandoval led the team in kills with 11 followed by senior Mariah McCoy, junior Skylar Mears and junior Cameron Thames with five kills each.

Herring led the team in assists with 14 while Peoples was second in assists with 13.

Defensively, Shipman led the team in digs with 17 followed by Herring and Sandoval with eight apiece.

McCoy led the team in total blocks with seven followed by Cameron Thames with four and Sandoval with three.

The defending 4A Divison II State Champions enter the playoffs as the favorite to repeat but will still face many challenges in their path for an eighth title.

Wimberley opens the Bi-District round of the playoffs in Luling as the Texans face-off with the Manor New Tech Titans. The Titans finished in third place in District 25 with a 20-11 overall record and a 10-4 district record. Tip-off for Wimberley- New Tech is set for 6 p.m. Thursday at Luling High School.
