Water Wise: Aquifer health and water flows, Oct. 25

The first presentation in the Water Wise series, “Beneath the Surface: Aquifer Health and Water Flows,” is this Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Wimberley Village Library.

As drought continues to grip the Hill Country and outdoor water use is becoming increasingly restricted, the first presentation in the Water Wise Series offers a clear, place-based look at where our water comes from, how much we have, and how the ground beneath us functions as both source and reservoir.

The presentation will explore the science of regional water flows, explain why conservation matters now, and share the everyday choices that make the biggest difference.

Three Water Wise speakers will will reflect on the current state of our water and explore the pathways to protecting it for future generations.

Speaker Linda Kaye Rogers, Hays Trinity Groundwater Conservation District board member for twelve years, has worked to achieve the legislative mandates to conserve, preserve and prevent the waste of groundwater. She will present historical data about the Trinity aquifer and share the science on its present and future condition.

Joining her are Adam Berglund of The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment in San Marcos and Sarah Carlisle, a Hays County Master Naturalist, who will offer their expertise on aquifer processes, and discuss strategies to protect it.

The program concludes with a live demonstration of how an aquifer works — turning underground processes into something you can see and understand.

A question and answer session follows the two-hour seminar. There is no charge to attend but please register at https://events.humanitix. com/waterwise- educational-series The next presentation in the series, “Roots and Flows: Water Wise Native Plant Gardens,” about integrating native landscapes in home gardens, will be held November 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at Triangle Park in Woodcreek.

The Water Wise community education series is presented by The Watershed Association in partnership with Salwa Khan’s Mothering Earth Podcast, Hays County, and the cities of Wimberley and Woodcreek, for the purpose of cultivating water resiliency in the Hill Country.
