Meeting community needs in a disaster

Disasters, both natural and human made, is the subject of a public roundtable discussion to be held October 22 in Wimberley.

A portrait of the real effects of disasters that disable critical systems – food, housing, communications, water, electricity, sanitation, transportation, mental health support, medical care and access to medications – will be drawn by a large panel of speakers who will discuss emergency plans and offer guidance on how individuals and families can prepare for disasters and support their neighbors.

In depth questions such as, “Who plans for emergencies and how do response efforts get organized and activated?” and, “What plans are already in place to meet community needs when disaster strikes?” will be explored and answered.

Panelists include Hays County Commissioner Morgan Hammer; Wimberley Mayor Jim Chiles; retired FEMA Hazard Mitigation Specialist and Barnabas Connection volunteer Tim Tempfer; Wimberley EMS Director Ken Strange; KWVH Wimberley Valley Radio General Manager Tim Kiesling; Wimberley Fire & Rescue Interim Fire Chief Chris Robbins; and Disaster Response and Relief Mass Feeding Specialist Scott Tidwell.

The event is co-sponsored by Wimberley Roundtable and the League of Women Voters of Hays County. To make the most of the discussion time, organizers say that focused questions from the two organizations and written questions from the audience will receive first priority.

The roundtable discussion will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wimberley Community Center, 14068 RR12. There is no charge to attend.
