Is It Just Me?

I took typing in high school and did very well. I can’t remember how many words per minute I typed, but I was darn fast with very few mistakes. Since high school, I’ve typed on manual and electric typewriters and then on computer keyboards – all with speed and accuracy. What more did I need to learn about typing?
Well, I find that I need to learn how to type with just my thumbs on my onscreen iPhone. Typing with only thumbs? Seriously, my thumbs are at least three times the size of one letter on that little keyboard. The two keys I am using the most are the backspace and delete keys. I am surprised that they aren’t broken from over-use. To top it off, the evil little computer in the phone is filling in the wrong words as I am typing. I said “sick” not “stink.” I backspace again if I find the error before I send it. If I have already sent it, I have to then send an apology. I think the computer adds the error just before I send it. Sometimes the error isn’t that funny.
The frustrating thing is that by the time I have written my message, reviewed, corrected and then sent it, I could have written the same message in crayon and mailed it to the person sooner.
But, I have learned a little trick. It only works if I am with a younger person. I hand them my phone and ask them to write a message for me and send it to a specific person. The message is done and sent within a few seconds. I don’t think they are better because they have smaller thumbs, but they have learned to type this way almost from birth. I’m not even sure if my typewriter skills would match their two-finger typing skills on a computer keyboard. I need to go back to school. Is there a class I can take in thumb typing?
