Texans fall to Austin LBJ in overtime

In a thrilling game featuring the top ten teams in Class 4A, Wimberley fell in overtime to the Austin LBJ Jaguars 34-33.

The Texans fall to 2-1 while Austin LBJ improves to 2-0. The loss was the first for Wimberley at Texan Stadium since 2021 against Alamo Heights.

After the Texans punted on their first drive, the Jaguars struck first on the first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Jaylen House hit wide receiver Louis Hickman on the screen pass before running for a 78-yard touchdown to put LBJ up 6-0 after the Texans blocked the extra point. Following another Texan punt, the Jaguars struck again. Driving down to the Wimberley 26-yard line, House found Antoine Baker near the sidelines before Baker took it up the field and reached the endzone. Following the extra point kick, the Texans trailed 13-0.

Sophomore Wesley Milam returned the ensuing kickoff to midfield, giving the Texans a chance to answer.

Wimberley drove down to the 10-yard line after converting on fourth down before senior running back Maverick Jacobs scored the touchdown, cutting the Jaguars lead to 13-7 after an extra point kick from Bo Holeman.

The ‘Code Red’ defense forced their first LBJ punt of the game early in the second quarter as the Texans took over from their own five yard line.

Wimberley was forced to punt as LBJ got the ball back before scoring on a 13-yard touchdown pass from House to Marquie Murry II, putting the Jaguars up 20-7.

Needing a touchdown drive before halftime, Wimberley drove down the field to the LBJ 26yard line. Quarterback Jackson Parker found wide receiver Christian Sansalone for the 26yard touchdown pass, cutting the defecit down to 20-14.

On the opening drive of the second half, the ‘Code Red’ defense forced a Jaguar punt as the Texans took over at midfield.

Following two big runs from Jacobs, the Texans moved to the LBJ 7-yard line before Jacobs punched it in for the score, giving Wimberley their first lead of the game at 21-20.

After the ‘Code Red’ defense forced another punt, the Texans looked to extend the lead.

Wimberley drove down to the LBJ four-yard line. Jacobs scored his third rushing touchdown of the night, putting Wimberey up 27--20 after the Texans didn’t convert on the two-point conversion.

Wimberley forced their third LBJ punt of the game as the Texans took over at the LBJ 47yard line.

However, LBJ stuffed the Texans on fourth down from the Jaguar 37-yard line, giving the Jaguars the ball back.

LBJ took advantage of the fourth down, scoring with 35 seconds left in the game on a 14yard touchdown pass from House to Baker, tying the game at 27-27. With the game going into overtime, LBJ took the first possession.

House struck again, throwing his fifth touchdown of the game, hitting Javarlyn Smith for the two-yard score to put LBJ up 3427.

With Wimberley getting the ball back, the Texans look to answer back. Going down to the 15-yard line, Parker hit junior Colt Wright for the touchdown pass as Wimberley went for the two-point conversion to take the win.

But the Texans were unable to convert as Wimberley fell 34-33.

Parker finished the game passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns. Sansalone led the team in receiving with two catches for 42 yards and one touchdown while Wright caught three passes for 27 yards and one touchdown.

Jacobs led the team in rushing with 29 carries for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

Wimberley returns home Friday against Lampasas. The Badgers are coming off a 13-12 win over the Killeen Chaparral Bobcats and enter the game with a 3-0 record.

Kickoff for Wimberley-Lampasas is set for 7:30 p.m. at Texan Stadium.
