The Wimberley Texans took home first place at the Tex-Fest Tournament over the weekend, beating Aubrey in the final 2-0 [25-21, 25-17].

Wimberley improved their overall record to 9-1 for the season after dropping their season opener to Buda Johnson in a thrilling five set series.

“It was a rough start on Tuesday,” Head Coach Misty Fletcher-Remmers said. “We made a lot of errors, 89 to be exact, but I do think that they bounced back with a really pretty quick turnaround. We have one day to practice on Wednesday. They started school Thursday, we played all through this.

“We saw some pretty intense competition, especially today, and I thought we did a much better job of stepping up and being a little bit more confident in what we were doing. … The physical growth was there, but the mental growth was nice to see.” The Texans opened up Tex-Fest play on Thursday against Laredo Nixon. Wimberley defeated the Mustangs 2-0 [25-9, 25-16] with senior Addison Parks leading the team in kills with four.

Wimberley turned around to take the Gainsville Leopards, with the Texans winning 2-0 [25-8, 25-9]. Freshman Trinity Laney led the team in kills with seven.

The Texans closed out the day against the Smithville Tigers, ending with another win for the Texans 2-0 [258, 25-10]. Laney and junior Drew Thames both led the team in kills with three apiece.

Playing their second round of games on Friday, Wimberley started play against powerhouse Johnson City.

The Texans put away the Eagles for another win at 2-0 [25-16, 2521]. Senior Lilli Sandoval led the team in kills with seven.

Wimberley then turned around for another win, beating the Canton Eagles 2-0 [2511, 25-15]. Thames, Sandoval and Laney all led the team in kills with five.

The Texans closed out the second day of play against Hill Country Christian School of Austin and took home the win 2-0 [25-10, 2514]. The duo of Laney and Parks led the team in kills with four.

Wimberley advanced to the gold bracket of the Tex-Fest tournament where the Texans had a shot at taking home first place.

The Texans started play in the gold bracket against Stockdale, where Wimberley won 2-0 [25-14, 25-16]. Thames led the team in kills with six.

Advancing to the semifinals, Wimberley faced off with Liberty Christian. Though the Texans dropped the first set, Wimberley bounced back to win 21 [20-25, 25-9, 25-12]. Parks led the team in kills with eight.

Playing in the championship final, the Texans faced powerhouse Aubrey. In a competitive final, Wimberley defeated Aubrey 2-0 [25-21, 25-17].

Wimberley goes on the road for the first time this year to battle Cedar Park on Tuesday before playing in the Glen Rose Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
