Texans look to senior leadership to defend their state title
THE TEXANS ARE BACK ON THE COURT LOOKING TO DEFEND THEIR STATE TITLE AFTER WINNING THE CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 15 YEARS. WIMBERLEY WILL LOOK TO LEAN ON THEIR SENIOR PLAYERS THIS SEASON.

Winning their first state championship in over 15 years, the Texans are back to defend their title as Wimberley hits the court in preparation for the 2025 season.

It was a successful offseason for Head Coach Misty Fletcher-Remmers, whose players not only were training after volleyball season but also contributing to the success of many of the other girls athletic programs.

“We’re really blessed to have kids who play multiple [sports],” Fletcher-Remmers said. “We had several on the soccer team, some that ran track, some who played basketball, all that. They went and continued to compete. That’s amazing and continues to build the kind of competitive spirit that I really like.

“When all of our really awesome playoff runs, we’ve been in the weight room, working on our physicality and making sure that we were prepared for that. Then more of the summer skill stuff has really been our focus back into volleyball.”

Now with everyone wrapped up with their other sports and club volleyball, the Texans are back in the gym focusing on this season.

“They’ve been pretty locked in,” Fletcher-Remmers said. “They’ve showed up, been doing some work. We’re running on all cylinders. We got to clean up some stuff, but I do think our offseason, the competing, the weightlifting, going out playing club [volleyball], they did their things, and I think it all came back for just a pretty strong physical group right now.”

The Texans are having to replace some key players from last year’s team including libero Rhagen Masur, defensive specialist Addie Laney, outside hitter Kinsey Rothbard and outside hitter Laney Hennessee who recently signed with Alabama.

But with Wimberley still retaining several players from last year’s team, the Texans are not expected to fall off by a considerable margin.

“We have 10 returners, so that is in itself awesome,” Fletcher-Remmers said. “We have a lot of senior leadership coming out of that so we’ve got some heavy arms and that’s really exciting. We’re just different.

“Those were four really good seniors. But I think we’re just different than we have been in the past. We’re going to have the ability to fire off any hitter and run things like that, so that’s really exciting.”

With everything not falling on just one player, Fletcher-Remmers is expecting the senior group to lead the team in multiple avenues and continue to maintain the championship excellence of the program.

“We’ve got some new kids and young kids,” Fletcher-Remmers said. “We have some kids that are kind of green in some areas so what’s lucky is we have 10 seniors who all bring something a little bit different for us. You’re going to see we have multiple leaders and multiple kids who lead us in different avenues. I like that it’s not just one person that’s trying to take over everything because that’s hard.

“So we have different kids running and leading different things, making sure that they’re setting the tone in very different ways for us. It just feeds into the idea that we’re still good, but we’re just different.”

Wimberley opened the season at home Tuesday night at Buda Johnson before the Wimberley View’s time of press. They are hosting the annual Tex-Fest Volleyball Tournament. This year’s Tex-Fest Tournament is scheduled to have 32 teams competing coming from all over the state ranging from Dallas-Fort Worth, Golden Triangle, East Texas, Corpus Christi and Laredo.

The Texans are scheduled to play Thursday night with Game 1 starting at 2 p.m., Game 2 starting at 4 p.m. and Game 3 starting at 6 p.m.
