High School football season is here and the Wimberley Texans are one of the first teams to start fall practice in the area.
It is a new era for the Texans as head coach and athletic director Doug Warren announced his retirement after more than 30 years of coaching with the last 12 leading Wimberley.
Offensive coordinator Wesley Lambert was elevated to both head coach and athletic director earlier this year and will lead Texans into a new era.
Wimberley is coming off a 12-3 season, winning both the district championship and the 4A Division 2 Region IV title. The Texans season came to an end in the state semifinals against Waco La Vega.
Wimberley returns four starters on both offense and defense from last year’s team. Look-ing to lead the offense is the running back duo of senior Maverick Jacobs and junior Josh Belanger. Belanger rushed for 570 yards on 72 carries and scored nine touchowns while Jacobs rushed for 381 yards on 60 carries and scored six touchdowns.
The Texans also return offensive lineman Cody Phillips, Rhett Rosborough and Will Kellerman.
Phillips will also help lead the defense after making 81 total tackles along with 41 solo tackles and eight tackles for loss.
Wimberley will open the season on the road against rival Canyon Lake. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday Aug. 29 at Canyon Lake.
