Along the Water Street bridge in downtown Kerrville, a memorial wall, pinned with photos, artifacts and prayers, remembers the individuals lost to the early morning flood of July 4. The visages of young and old alike look out from their place on the wall, underscoring the enormity of the tragedy that befell this small community and others when the Guadalupe River, swelled by enormous rains, flooded.
Friends, schoolmates, neighbors and strangers approach it quietly. A rescue group from Oklahoma prays at one end. In between teddy bears, recovered t-shirts and backpacks, hundreds of messages affirm their love for the lost and send them godspeed on their journey.
For those who want to pay their respects, the memorial wall can be found in downtown Kerrville on Water Street at Clay. A parking garage opposite the bridge offers free parking.
