The search for two dozen missing people entered its fifth day on Tuesday after the Guadalupe River flooded six Hill Country counties. According to the BBC, at least 104 people have been killed in Kerr, Kendall, Tom Green, Burnet, Williamson and Travis counties following torrential downpours that began on Thursday. Reports of flood victims, flood details and the warning system process continue to evolve as more is learned.
As of Tuesday morning, according to multiple news outlets, Kerr County sustained the most losses at 84 people, devastating the town of Kerrville and taking the lives of 27 girls and staff members at Camp Mystic, an allgirls Christian summer camp on the banks of the Guadalupe river in Hunt.
Wimberley’s Mercy Chefs, spearheaded by Jay Bachman of the Wimberley Cafe, left Saturday for the stricken area to hand out hot meals to survivors, rescuers, and volunteers. According to an update shared by KWVH radio, “They are feeding tons of people. Parents have flooded the area. There are displaced vacationers and the law enforcement presence is huge. If you’re looking for a way to make a contribution that will matter, donate to Mercy Chefs. They are buying tons of food to feed as many as they can.”
On Sunday, Christy and Tad Dagenhart of Ace Hardware & Gift left for Kerrville to aid the ravaged region. In a Facebook post on Saturday, Christy wrote “Our small town is no stranger to this. Not too long ago, we were there. We understand truly and sincerely the sadness and desperation. If you are in Wimberley and would love to help, please consider joining forces with one of the multiple local efforts.” The Degenharts took a truck filled with donations of cleaning supplies, tools, brooms, storage containers, gift cards and cash to help with rebuilding, funeral expenses and other immediate needs.
KWVH’s General Manager Tim Kiesling provided updates throughout the weekend from the National Weather Service.
