The 79th Wimberley VFW Fourth of July Rodeo trudged through last weekend despite the rainy and muddy conditions.

The longest running rodeo in Hays County is an annual tradition in Wimberley, attracting some of the best cow- boys and cowgirls from across the state.

On Sunday, rain began to fall, cancelling the 7 p.m. performance. This year’s rodeo is a part of the new Triple Crown Series, involving the Stonewall Peach Jamboree and the Taylor Rodeo, with the overall winners being awarded the Sheridan Trophy Saddles.

Proceeds from the rodeo are used to support the VFW Post 6441 for Veteran and community activities. This year, a portion of the proceeds are being given to those affected by the deadly Hill Country floods that took place this past weekend.

The sport of rodeo has existed for over 100 years with its origins tracing back to Mexico. Rodeo events are based on actual skills both cowboys and cowgirls use when working on their respective ranches.
