The Shortest Cozy Murder Mystery

I have been reading quite a few Cozy Murder Mysteries lately. The detective is always asking pointed questions of witnesses. I am amazed at how much they all remember. They all seem to know where they were on a certain day, remember what they were wearing, and can give a detailed description of what they saw. If someone used me to be a witness in their cozy mystery story, the conversation with the detective would probably go like this.

“So, where were you on February 21?”

“I have no idea. Let me look at my calendar. There is nothing specific written, but I often forget to add appointments to my calendar. Maybe I was at home or I was grocery shopping, or something.”

“Someone saw an older woman who was near the crime scene that day. It could have been you.

What were you wearing?”

“First, I would like to know why you think they were talking about me when they said ‘olderwoman.’ But again, I don’t know where I was that day and couldn’t tell you what I was wearing, if I was that ‘older woman’ they described. I know I wasn’t wearing a dress, since I rarely wear one. I hope that helps.”

The detective shook his head with enough force that I wanted to ask if he needed an aspirin.

He finally said wearily, “Why are you avoiding answering my questions?”

“I’m not trying to avoid them, I just don’t remember that far back.”

“Really, what can you remember?”

“My fifth grade teacher was Mrs Murphy. My first dog was named Oliver. I used to take number 42 bus to school.”

“I understand that you were possibly the only witness to the crime scene, yet you don’t remember anything?”

“That’s correct.”

“Are you trying to cover for someone?”

“No, I am just not a visual person. I used to tell friends that if my kids were kidnapped, I couldn’t describe them.”

“Have you had your eyes checked?”

“Not lately, but thanks for the recommendation.”

The end of the shortest Cozy Murder Mystery.
