Wimberley salutes the red, white and blue with parade and concert

Wimberley celebrates America’s birthday, July 4, with a retro-themed parade on Friday at 10 a.m.

The parade kicks off at Lions Field, wends its way through the Wimberley Square and ends on Stillwater road. Road closures along the route will begin at 9:30 a.m. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to find a good viewing spot.

Organized by the Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce and presented by H-E-B Operation Appreciation, participants have chosen their favorite decade — ‘50s, ‘60s, ‘70s, or ‘80s — and have decorated their entry accordingly for the retro- themed event. Don’t be surprised to see poodle skirts, rock ‘n’ roll, tie-dye and peace signs, disco balls and bell bottoms, or neon and big hair. It’s a new way for the community to show off their patriotic flair with a nostalgic twist.

“This event brings out the very best of our community,” said Becca Hancock, Executive Director of the Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce. “We’re incredibly grateful to H-E-B Operation Appreciation and the City of Wimberley for their continued support. We can’t wait to see how our community shows up in full retro-patriotic style!”

The parade will feature floats, the Wimberley Independent School District band, classic cars and other displays decked out to celebrate Independence Day, retro- style.

After the parade, visit the Wimberley Presbyterian Church, 956 FM 2325, for free hot dogs, ice water, Karaoke and fun, at 11 a.m.

At 3 p.m., enjoy the Thirteenth Annual Hometown Patriotic Concert at the Wimberley First Baptist Church, at 15951 Winters Mill Parkway. The Wimberley Community Chorus and the Hill Country Community Band team up to perform such favorite songs as “America the Beautiful,” “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” “God Bless America,” and “Stars and Stripes Forever,” along with other rousing selections. The performance includes a video presentation, color guard and a veteran tribute. There is no charge to attend.
