One of the extraordinary advantages of living in the United States is our National Park System. When Yellowstone was designated a national park in 1872, it became the first such park in the world. While Yellowstone became the first national park, the National Park Service was not established until 1916 when President Woodrow Wilson signed the act that created it.
According to the Library of Congress, “It is no coincidence that the first national park was explored and established in the same decade that saw publication of a great variety of articles and books about nature and wilderness. Several of the writers associated with the national park movement, including Clarence Dutton, Ferdinand V. Hayden, Clarence King, Nathaniel P. Langford, John Muir and John Wesley Powell, described the spectacular scenery of the western United States.”

In that rich vein, July is the month set aside to celebrate national parks. Wimberley Parks and Recreation department joins in the observance by inviting the community to appreciate the vital role that parks and recreation play in Wimberley’s health, environment and quality of life.
Their 2025 theme, “Build Together, Play Together,” emphasizes the role that collaboration plays in strengthening communities through parks and recreation. From families enjoying time at Blue Hole Regional Park to volunteers supporting local events, Wimberley’s parks are built by and for the people they serve.
To kick off the celebration, a proclamation will be presented at the Wimberley City Council meeting on Thursday, July 17, at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Community members are encouraged to attend and show support for the programs, staff and open spaces that make Wimberley such a special place to live and visit.
“Parks and recreation are not just about green spaces—they’re about connection, belonging, and the experiences that bring people together,” said Richard Shaver, Director of Wimberley Parks and Recreation. “This month is a great opportunity to recognize that and encourage everyone to get outside and get involved.”
Throughout the year, Wimberley PARD offers a variety of recreational and educational programs, including youth summer camps, adult fitness classes, special events and environmental education initiatives. The department also continues its commitment to sustainability and conservation through the stewardship of natural resources and community partnerships. Their vision — Wimberley PARD C.A.R.E.S. — stands for Community, Accessibility, Recreation, Education and Sustainability.
