Wimberley clinches Lone Star Cup award

Despite the sports season ending last week, Wimberley is bringing home another trophy to add to their collection.

Following the conclusion of the UIL State Baseball Tournament, Wimberley was declared the winner of the UIL 4A Lone Star Cup, winning the cup with 106.5 points over second place Celina who finished with 106 points and Canyon Randall who finished with 103.5 points.

This marks the second time Wimberley has won the Lone Star Cup with the Texans winning in the 19992000 UIL sports season.

The Lone Star Cup is awarded to six high schools of each classification based on a school’s performance both in district and state championships.

This year’s sports season is considered to be one of the best in program history for Wimberley in regards to the number of teams that not only won district championships but also competed for state championships in their respective sports.

The season started off with a bang as the Wimberley volleyball team captured their first state title since 2007, beating Canyon Randall 3-2 in a reverse sweep. Texans football captured their fourth straight district championship and advanced to their third consecutive state semifinal game.

Wimberley team tennis advanced to the state tournament for the second consecutive year before falling to Canyon Randall in the state semifinals.

On the basketball court, both the boys and girls team qualified for the playoffs with the Lady Texans advancing to Area while the Texans made history by advancing to their first ever regional final before falling to powerhouse La Marque.

Lady Texans girls soccer also had a historic season, winning the district title and making a run to the state championship game before falling to Canyon Randall in the finals.

In spring tennis, the duo of Marcus Gonzalez and Branton Kirchner won the 4A Boys Double title. Kennedy and Kate Carson also advanced to the finals of the 4A Girls Double state tournament. Logan Carpenter and Kyndan Gilley advanced to the semifinals of the 4A Mixed Doubles state tournament and Tyler Youens qualified for the state tournament in 4A Boys singles.

Wimberley’s track season saw multiple athletes qualifying for the state meet. Corina Joyce placed sixth in the 3,200-M run and Charlie Hanle placed second in the pole vault. Nolan Waida placed third in the triple jump, fifth in the long jump and fifth in the 200-M dash. The Texans 4x200 meter relay placed third overall and the 4x400 meter relay placed third. The boys track team placed second overall, scoring 46 points.

In softball, the Wimberley Texans advanced to the regional semifinals for the first time in several seasons beating Manor New Tech and Cuero in the playoffs.

The Texans baseball season made a historic run after sharing the district title in a threeway tie. Wimberley went on to advance into the state title game for the first time in program history and essentially clinched the Lone Star Cup for the Texans athletic program.
